Govt says rebels must withdraw from the Amhara, Afar as a condition for the resumption of negotiations

The Ethiopian government on Thursday outlined three necessary conditions for possible discussions with the Tigrayan rebels if the one-year war in northern Ethiopia is to end.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Dina Mufti said the TPLF must withdraw from Amhara and Afar regions as one of the conditions for possible talks. It must also recognize and accept the legitimacy of the federal government and it should stop its attacks, he added.

“These three points may or may not be preconditions for negotiations,” said Dina. He said no talks have been held between the rebels and the Ethiopian government so far, nor any decision has been made to enter into negotiations.

Dina admitted the door for negotiations was still open, but it depends on the other side, (Tigray rebels) because “it takes two to tango.”

The AU envoy for the Horn of Africa, Olusegun Obasanjo, and U.S. Special Envoy Jeffrey Feltman, have both visited Ethiopia this week to push for a ceasefire.

Feltman returned to Washington on Thursday to consult with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other senior Biden administration officials on U.S. diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, a State Department spokesperson said.
