Opposition figure appears in court

The founder and former president of the Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP), Lidetu Ayalew appeared in court on Monday for the second time since being detained on July 24 amid chaos which occurred following the death of Hacahalu Hundessa.

Lidetu appeared in court this morning following a request by police to be granted additional seven days to carry out the necessary investigation but President of the EDP, Adane Tadesse said that no other additional material was presented in the hearing. However, a medical report stating that the defendant had a preexisting heart condition was presented to the court.

The medical reports show that the politician is ill and his life may be at risk, with the possibility of becoming infected with COVID-19. A piece of medical evidence showing an appointment already scheduled in the US was also presented, according to Adane. Despite that, the opposition politician was ordered to be held another 7 days during the hearing, it was said. After the decision, Lidetu was quoted as saying, “Being denied to get the medical attention, despite evidence that I urgently needed it, was like a death sentence.”

About the two firearms police had said found while searching Lidetu’s house, the defendant claimed that one did not function, got it as a gift from his father, and the other was registered, had registration documents to prove it, Adane said.

In the previous trial, Lidetu had no lawyer as he could not find one who would take his case but this morning he was assisted by a lawyer, Adana said.

Lidetu is accused of coordinating and financially supporting the recent chaos in Bishoftu town.

  1. Where are the witch doctors of Wollo Mugen at a critical period when Lidetu Ayalew needs them most. They saved his life during the rigged election where 200 people were killed in cold blood and another 800 maimed for life in 2005. Does the life of this mediocre and old fraud politician worth more than those youngsters who lost their life on the street of Addis Ababa? The answer is of course: the resounding “No”

  2. How about you Paulos Assefa, cynical old man constantly spewing your vile hatred on the internet? What is your life worth? Surely not an iota of that of someone, like Lidetu, who actually sacrificed something for a positive belief in something.

  3. Lidietu must have paid you a lot for your tiny effort. Your inane assertion about me, for all intents and purposes, incorrect. Can you give the reader any “positive things” this intellectually light weight and tabloid figure contributed to the welfare of Ethiopia , except, to enrich himself. It made my cat laugh. One doesn’t have to ask Berhanue Nega or the widow, Azeb Mesefin to learn that Lidieu Kidetu is the alpha Wolf where other wolves run from. That much is , fact that you seemed to be oblivious. He is no benefit like the former PM Tamrat Lyine to Ethiopia, let alone, to their provincial, Lasta.
