Egypt expels Ethiopian diplomat in retaliatory move

Egypt has ordered an Ethiopian diplomat to leave the country, a day after Ethiopia expelled an Egyptian official in Addis Ababa. An Egyptian senior official told state news agency MENA on Friday that the move was “unjustified.”

The official said Egypt firmly rejects interference in the internal affairs of other countries and does not comment on domestic developments in Ethiopia or elsewhere, in line with international law and the UN Charter. MENA reported that, in response to Ethiopia’s action, an Ethiopian diplomat in Cairo was given 48 hours to leave Egypt.

Ethiopia ordered the closure of its embassy in the Eritrean capital Asmara and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats serving in Addis Ababa persona non grata.

It subsequently declared a diplomat at the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa persona non grata and gave him a deadline to leave the country.
