Four dead, including children, in mortar attacks on Amhara’s North Wollo zone

Four people, including children, were killed and seven others injured in a series of mortar attacks in the North Wollo Zone of the Amhara region on Sunday, June 29, 2025, according to eyewitnesses and local officials who spoke to the BBC. The attack occurred in Muja, in Gidan Woreda, at approximately 8:40 a.m. The local administration accused the Fano forces active in the area of being responsible. The attack occurred around the football field, which was believed to be the planned site of a public demonstration organized by the government, according to three residents and local officials who spoke to the BBC. The woreda administrator, Ammanuel Ayalew, stated that five mortar rounds were fired, suggesting the attack was intended to disrupt the demonstration.” During the attack, everyone was frantically trying to ensure their safety. Some were heading to hospitals, while others were searching for their family members. It was chaotic,” a witness said after the incident.

Two mortar shells hit residents’ huts, two struck locations in the football field where public gatherings were held, and one landed in rural areas outside the village, according to the administrator.

Seven young people sustained injuries during the attack and were transported to the health station for treatment, the administrator said. “A total of seven were injured, consisting of five children and two girls,” he said.

The Amhara regional government has called for demonstrations throughout the region on Sunday to condemn the armed group Fano. The demonstrations were largely accompanied by slogans advocating for peace in the region and urging the government to ensure security.
