Christian Tadele, a former federal lawmaker and outspoken critic of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who is in prison, is seriously ill, his lawyer and family have said.
His lawyer, Solomon Gezaegn, told the BBC he visited Tadele at Kilinto Prison on Monday and found him suffering complications from recent surgery.
A family member said Tadele underwent surgery a few months ago at Mekrez Hospital, but was returned to prison before receiving proper treatment.
Christian Tadele joined parliament as a representative of the National Amhara Movement (NaMA) and served as the chair of the Permanent Committee on Government Expenditure and Administration. Amid tensions in the Amhara region and a state of emergency, he was arrested, and his parliamentary immunity has been lifted.
Lawyer Solomon said that since the courts were closed for the rainy season vacation, he had not been in touch with his client, but went to see him after learning of his illness. The lawyer said that following surgery, his client had not been provided with necessary follow-up care or food.
A family member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he tried to bring food recommended by doctors but was not allowed to enter. The family member said his condition was critical and that he was unable to speak to visitors.
