Explosions heard overnight in Addis

Explosions were heard overnight in Addis Ababa, as fighting continues in northern Ethiopia between federal forces and Tigrayan fighters. People living in different parts of the capital, including Gotera and Bethel, said they heard loud explosions shortly after midnight. “The explosion was very loud; it was strong enough to set off car alarms,” the BBC reported, citing a witness.

The source of the blasts remains unclear. Social media posts linked to the opposition alliance claimed that it had carried out several drone strikes in the capital. If confirmed, they would mark the first known drone attacks by anti-government forces on Addis Ababa, hundreds of miles from the front lines in the northern regions. Witnesses reported no visible damage in the areas mentioned.

The reports came a day after Ethiopia’s national intelligence agency announced restrictions on drone activity in Addis Ababa and nearby areas until further notice, citing security concerns.
