Arrests of young people across Addis Ababa as fears grow

A wave of arrests targeting young people has spread across Addis Ababa, creating fear among communities. Local sources say hundreds of people have been detained in recent weeks, with arrests reported in several parts of the city. It is not clear whether the detentions are linked to military recruitment.

One person told Ethiopia Observer that his brother was arrested while on his way to the shops and has been held in custody for three days. The family says it has struggled to obtain clear information about the reason for his detention.

Others say young people have been detained at recreational venues, including pool halls and billiard bars, as well as while gathering in residential neighborhoods.

Several people say that some of those carrying out the arrests were plainclothes or surveillance police. They allege that the presence of unidentified officers has made people increasingly fearful of being detained while going about their daily lives.

Some detainees have been released, but others remain behind bars, in some cases for weeks, without being formally charged or given due process.

There are also allegations of bribery. According to those interviewed, some families have been asked for money in exchange for the release of relatives or to prevent further harassment. Authorities have not explained how many people have been arrested or why they were detained.
