A drone strike hit a displacement camp in Tigray region on Sunday, killing at least eight people, including a child, AFP reported, citing a humanitarian source.
The source told AFP that six other people were seriously wounded in the strike, which targeted a centre for displaced people. A witness said a mother, her four children and a grandson were among those killed.
“The entire family was wiped out,” the witness told AFP.
The witness also said three other people were killed in the attack, potentially putting the death toll at 11, although AFP cited the humanitarian source’s figure of eight fatalities. The strike hit the Adi Abay displacement camp, located near the Eritrean border and more than 150 kilometres northwest of Tigray’s regional capital, Mekele.
Another drone strike hit the town of Adwa in Tigray region over the weekend, around 100 kilometres northwest of Mekele, according to AFP.
The outlet did not provide information on casualties or the extent of the damage caused by the strike.
The reported attack comes amid renewed fighting between federal forces and Tigrayan forces, following months of rising tensions in the region.
