Ethiopian Airlines chief to steps down as the company faces turbulence
  • Lemma Yadecha expected to replace Mesfin Tasew

Mesfin Tasew, Group Chief Executive of Ethiopian Airlines, is set to depart the carrier, according to people familiar with the matter.

Appointed in March 2022, his exit—if confirmed—would mark another leadership transition at the airline’s highest level, a role widely regarded as both demanding and high-pressure.

The development comes as the airline grapples with the spillover effects of conflict in the Middle East, forcing it to balance immediate operational disruptions with long-term strategic ambitions.

People familiar with the matter said he could leave the airline as early as May 2026. Internal reports suggest he has already stepped back from day-to-day responsibilities.

Lemma Yadecha is widely expected to succeed him. He has served as Ethiopian Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer since April 2022.

During his tenure, Mesfin has overseen the airline’s ambitious “Vision 2035” growth strategy, which includes adding new routes, increasing flight frequencies, acquiring aircraft and expanding operations annually.

“We have already made significant progress, with our fleet now at around 170 aircraft, including those operated by partner airlines,” he said recently.,” he said recently.
