French journalist Augustine Passilly expelled from Ethiopia

French journalist Augustine Passilly was expelled from Ethiopia after authorities declined to renew her accreditation, effectively ending her ability to work in the country. According to Meseret Media, Passilly reported from Ethiopia for several international media outlets, including La Croix, Mediapart, and Le Temps, covering major political and social developments. Her expulsion is seen as another sign of the challenges facing independent journalism in Ethiopia and the pressures faced by reporters covering sensitive issues.

Her latest reportage from Shire, in the Tigray region, was published three days ago in La Croix. Titled “Shire, Tigray: ‘I Won’t Pay Unless They Send Me to Prison’,” the report examines local residents’ resistance to pressure linked to possible war financing demands. She also reported on the recently concluded elections, highlighting concerns raised by the opposition.

Her expulsion is seen as part of wider concerns about press freedom in Ethiopia and the challenges faced by independent journalists.
