At least two people were killed and several others wounded two days ago when armed men alleged to be members of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) opened fire in two kebeles of Megale woreda in Zone 2 of Ethiopia’s Afar region, DW Amharic.DW Amharic reported.
In Eda kebele, one of the affected areas, the local administrator, Siraj Sadik, told DW that during attacks involving heavy weapons such as mortars, TPLF assailants fired on the area, resulting in two deaths and an unspecified number of wounded.
The administrator said similar attacks occurred on May 31, the day before Ethiopia’s election, when two 12-year-old boys who were herding cattle were killed. He said the attackers also took the cattle. He added that local militias, who are part of the government security forces in the area, were unable to respond effectively to the attack. The regional authorities say such attacks have been ongoing for the past five years.
Since the end of the 2022 war between the federal government and the TPLF, officials in Afar have occasionally reported cross-border attacks they blame on TPLF fighters.
Officials say forces from the Tigray Region crossed into Afar and seized several villages in November 2025 and are still in control of Milki, Warea, Mila, Kereftu, Kaosobera and Keremuaga. About 18,000 people were displaced in Megale woreda following the attack.
